Participant roles & responsibilities
All FIP members including fishermen, processors or retailers are required to sign up to a set of membership rules including provision of details to enable traceability.
The main undertaking for fishermen is to provide catch details in relation to product from the FIP which may include quantities landed, areas fished, gear fished and the buyer of the product. Fishermen may also be required to participate in other initiatives such as data provision in order to improve scientific knowledge of stock status or to verify progress towards CFP Maximum Sustainable Yield goals.
Likewise sales agents and processor who are FIP members must undertake to supply data on FIP product including vessel details, quantities landed, processed quantities and where the product was sold.
The Irish Brown Crab FIP has been established with the support of An Bord Iascaigh Mhara, BIM.
BIM is a state organisation which helps to develop the Irish Seafood Industry. BIM’s mission is to grow a thriving Irish seafood industry; expand the raw material base, add value and develop efficient supply chains that together deliver on the Government’s Food Harvest 2020 targets for seafood and create sustainable jobs.
BIM are funding the FIP project development due to the benefits the FIP will bring to the fishery and in the marketplace.
The Marine Institute (MI) are the State agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation in Ireland. They provide scientific and technical advice to Government to help inform policy and to support the sustainable development of Ireland’s marine resource. MI scientists and the FIPs will be working together to improve the scientific knowledge of fish stocks and to ensure progress is made towards the goal of managing all fisheries within a Maximum Sustainable Yield framework.
